Justice in Pittsburgh Sexual Assault Comes 12 Years Later

|

The perpetrator a 2002 sexual assault against an 18 year-old woman will be sentenced in April. The assault, which occurred in the woman's Shadyside apartment, remained unsolved for years – until a match in a national database helped police find the suspect.

The 47 year-old defendant was found guilty of the 2002 sexual assault on Monday. He is set to be sentenced by Judge David R. Cashman on April 8th – for crimes which occurred well over a decade ago.

The incident in question occurred on July 25, 2002. The accused reportedly illegally entered the apartment of the then 18 year-old college student at about 2:30am. According to court testimony, he then threatened the woman with a handgun, demanding money from her and forcing her to perform sexual acts with him. The case went unsolved until the accused was identified as a suspect in 2010, when his DNA was found in a national database. After some investigation it was determined that his DNA matched that of the perpetrator of the violent 2002 incident.

The charges against the defendant included five counts of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, several counts of sexual assault, false imprisonment, and even terroristic threats, among other charges.
